The potential of Backyard Workshop
A backyard shed or backyard workshop can be so much. A shed can be a place to keep the lawn mower, to keep the garden chairs and hang up a few tools. A shed can also be a place to use those tools to make and fix. A shed can be what you want it to be.
For many of us a shed is our happy place, its a place where we get to escape a little bit and indulge in our hobby. Your hobby and now businesses could be making prefabricated sheds and workshops or something more common like model making or a space to fix your tools and toys. When I am building a backyard workshop what I am really wanting to build is a backyard workshop that I could imagine my Grandfather in, with his homemade lathe at one end and the work bench against the wall and his chisels and tools in racks on the back wall.
Our sheds are not really sheds they are workshops. If you are looking for somewhere just to park the mower there are probably better options out there. If you are really looking for a workshop shed then lets talk.
The 360 Backyard Shed / Backyard Workshop
The 360 is our all year shed. Constructed from pre-assembled panels with R22 for the walls and R28 for floor skid and roof. The shed is finished with ¾” plywood sheathing on the walls to give you plenty of space to hang tools and equipment. The floor too is ¾” ply to give a strong base to support workshop equipment. If you request it, we can add additional cross braces to the floor at the pre-assembly stage to reinforce the floor.
A Modular Prefabricated Backyard Workshop Shed
Just like our backyard offices and studios our backyard sheds and workshops are prefabricated in Calgary factory. We then transport the modules to your backyard to your backyard and can quickly assemble them onsite without the mess of a traditional construction site.
Window selection
Our standard 360 Backyard shed comes with one large 3 foot by 4 foot fixed or slide window is fitted to provide plenty of natural light to work by. If you would like something different, let us know and we will work how best to make that happen.
Door selection
The standard door is a simple strong insulated steel door. If you want something different let us know and we can have a chat and find something that does exactly what you want.
Yoho Backyard Office Details:
- 12′ x 8′ layout gives plenty of work space at the same time as not needing a building permit.
- Simple 36″ steel door, painted white lock and door handle fitted.
- A 3 foot by 4 foot double glazed casement (hand crank to open) window with removable mesh window cover. This gives good light to the workshop.
- A slopping (1:10) gradient metal roof. The roof is insulated with R30 closed cell foam.
- External walls are clad in LP SmartSide panels, these can be painted in our standard colours or on request your own choice of colour.
- There is a choice for the cladding panels between the standard ‘Cedar Texture’ we use and ‘Smooth Finish” panels, these are special order and may take some time for delivery.
- The exterior walls are finished as board and batten with battens every 24″, this gives a nice detail to the backyard office.
- Roof drip edge all the way around in black to steer rain away from the roof.
- Lower skid trim (below door level) in black.
- Insulation is Rockwool R22 for walls, floor and roof. Framing is 2×6’s all-round with 16in framing for skid and roof, 24” framing for the walls.
- Interior wall finishing is 3/4″ good one side sanded plywood, selection will depend on availability. Joints between panels will be covered with 1′ trim.
- Flooring is ¾” ply to give a strong base to support workshop equipment. If you request it, we will add additional cross braces to the floor at the pre-assembly stage to reinforce the floor.

Material prices are constantly changing this price is based on our standard material costs. If prices are above or below we will need to adjust appropriately
Options
The great thing about our modular design is that the design can be changed. That does of course involve design and procurement work. If you are thinking of different window or door options, let us know and we can chat how best to meet your needs.
